The olive ir the olive tree belongs to the family of oilseeds and is the most common tree that is found in almost every part of Greece. Its fruit is called olive as well and from this fruit it is produced the olive oil that is also called “the gold liquid”. The olive has received numerous notations. This tree has always been regarded by the Greeks as the priceless gift to humanity. It is the symbol of peace, prosperity, protection and fertility. It is a tree of the “good”, the symbol of victory yet immortality and prosperity. Since anciet times the Olympians received as the highest honour for an athletean olive wreath that was called “kotinos”. The olive was also the sacred tree of Athena. According to myhtology, the goddess Athena gave the olive tree to the Athenians as a symbol of fertility in order to win the God Posidon to determine whose the name the town will take. The result as it is perceived was the vidicated.
In the depths of history, the olive was found first in the eastern Mediterranean. Again according to the ancient Greek tradition, the home of the olive is Athens and indeed the first olive tree was planted by the Goddess Athena on Acropolis. The Greeks were the first people who cultivated the olive tree in the European Mediterranean area.
